demolition day

Today, GSO was the hottest spot in all of Rhode Island. Governor Carcieri declared GSO as the official state viewing site for the demolition of the old Jamestown Bridge (no doubt Buddy Cianci had his hand in it somewhere too). Traffic has been flowing across the "new" Jamestown-Verrazano Bridge since 1992. So every family in the whole state packed the kids in the car and camped out on the GSO beach to see the big event. What a zoo. I got to watch from the roof of my building. Ka-boom!

what was the second boom? did they destroy another section or was that they delay from the first one?

I bet the second boom at the end of the movie was the sound wave. Kinda like lightning and thunder.

there is only one boom. in fact, some smarty pants ought to be able to figure out how far away the bridge is by the time delay between the light and the sound.

Well, the bridge went bye-bye at 2.2 seconds into the movie and the sound was heard at 14.9 seconds, or 12.7 seconds in travel time. Knowing the speed of sound and doing some higher order calculations, we get 2.6 miles. Using a measurement tool to check, yep, about right.

Remember, April is Math Awareness Month

how will they fish all of the debris out of the water? i heard they want to recycle the steel, and move the conrete to other places for reefs, but who has to sail around and pull it all up? please investigate.

the RI DOT is doing most of the recycling/moving of the debris. they are out there with a crane barge today hauling out wreckage.
